I had a dream about Docker last night. A dream in which I was driving my old car, and I had to put it in park. A dream in which I had to open the rear door of my car and put my old car in park. A dream in which I had to put my car on its wheels and put my old car in park. Sounds silly, but it was pretty much the same dream. And I realized it is still happening to me.

The dream was an illustration of the way that Docker, the open-source container platform, is changing the way we think of storage. With Docker, you can run multiple instances of a Linux distribution’s applications on the same machine, and the applications can use any disk and network device. This is an attractive option because it allows you to run some applications off of the same physical disk, such as a web server, without having to buy a second disk.

Docker uses virtual disks and network overlay filesystems to allow you to run multiple instances of the same Linux distribution on the same machine. The most popular version of Docker is based on the Linux kernel. Another popular version is based on the Windows kernel.
