Converting your old Office Document Templates (ODT) files to a new PDF format can be a bit daunting, but it’s well worth the effort. Not only does converting the files save on space but it saves tons of time as compared to manually creating PDF files from your.odt files.

You can just make a new A4 page and paste the original ODT file. The new PDF will look exactly like the old one, except with the new formatting. You can then edit the new PDF to your heart’s content and save it as your preferred format. Converting an ODT file to a PDF format is pretty easy. You just need to go to File, Save As, and select the PDF format you want.

There are several free programs available to do this. One is called PDF2Odt, which is an open source one. You can check it out here. The another is called odto, which in addition to converting the file save on space but it also saves tons of time as compared to manually creating PDF files from your ODT files.

There is also a nifty site called Docx2PDF.com that converts your ODT file to a PDF format.

I was using odto on a previous task, and it took me about a minute to convert the file to docx format. This one can be done in a matter of seconds! I’m not sure what the conversion time is for the odt file, but the docx conversion does seem to be quite fast. The conversion is also very simple.

I think this is a good idea for those of us who prefer to use their own word processing software and prefer ODT files over Word files. In the end, it’s still just PDFs… but I guess that’s what we’re there for.
