I’ve always been the type to feel that I understood how I was acting, but in my 20s I had the opposite experience. I started to realize that I was doing pretty much whatever my mind decided to do.

What’s interesting about this topic is that we can’t ever really be sure exactly why we behave the way that we do. I can easily think I’m a better person than my mother, and then in my mind’s eye I can still see her smiling at me. Habitually thinking about our habits can help us break them. When we think about our habits, we start to realize that they are a natural part of our character. We are what we do. We can’t really change that. We can however, change our thoughts about what we are thinking.

A habit is the behavior we do which is repetitive. It’s why we have to be constantly reminded that we have to do something each day. We need to repeat our habits and we need to repeat our thoughts. The best way to break a habit is to think about something else. It’s hard to break a habit of sitting in the couch reading a book all day.
